08 Mar 2011
The leader of Swale Borough Council, Andrew Bowles believes that the 5,000 houses identified in the Council’s Core Strategy to fund the A2/M2 link road necessary for the expansion of the Kent Science Park are necessary to fullfil social housing needs. He also claims that not building these houses would artificially restrict the supply of housing leading to homelessness.

This pro-science park propaganda is quite ridiculous and has no basis in fact. Cllr Bowles has made a number of entirely false statements which are deliberately designed to mislead the public on the subject of housing need.

Three out of four of the Councils own options do not include for the additional 5,000 proposed for the Kent Science Park, which would take the total housing to 18,500, so it is hardly fair to suggest that not including this housing element would artificially restrict the supply of housing within the borough leading to homelessness.

Swale Borough Council has stated that we need only around 9,000 to support our own growth projections. However even this includes significant inward migration for Sittingbourne and Sheppey from Faversham as practically no new housing will be built there.

Cllr Bowles is suggesting that we need not just the 9,000 houses to support our own growth, plus an additional 9,500 to deal with migration and to make housing more affordable. No amount of new housing has ever resulted in making housing more affordable, this is a total fantasy and he should be ashamed of himself for peddling this unsubstantiated nonsense.
