A school has been presented with numerous prizes after entering this year’s Litter Angels anti-litter competition.

Kathleen Rush, a Year 5 pupil at Bapchild and Tonge Primary School, won the aged five to nine category and former pupil Ashley Hudson, who is now at Sittingbourne Community College, won the 10-13 age group.

Sioux Peto, chairman of the Swale Arts Forum, presented the youngsters with a certificate, a plaque and £25 of book tokens during an awards ceremony assembly.

The assembly also included a story about litter which was written by teacher Susannah Butcher and performed by the school’s Eco warriors.

The school also received £25 worth of book tokens for each winning entry and these were presented to the head teacher, Teresa Holman, by Gordon Henderson, director of the Swale Community Action Project.

In addition, Mrs Holman was also presented with framed copies of the winning entries. These will be hung in the school’s reception area.

Mr Henderson, who is also the Conservative’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, said: “Litter Angels is designed to highlight the importance of looking after our local environment and encourage residents of all ages to keep Swale clean and green.

"It was really good to see how seriously Bapchild and Tonge Primary School takes ecological issues.

“Mrs Holman and her staff are setting an example that I very much hope will be taken up by more and more local schools.”

Litter Angels is sponsored by Swale Community Action Project (SCAP), the Polka Dot Art Centre and SWEEEP, the electrical waste processing plant in Sittingbourne.

The winning posters can be seen at the Polka Dot Art Centre in London Road, Teynham.
