Northern Relief Road Route under threat by Doubleday’s transport hub plans.

26 Aug 2012Plans for a large scale expansion of Hempstead Farm could eliminate route options for the Northern Relief Road discussed during the consultation in early 2010.
Although vigorously denied at the time by those representing the Doubleday’s, it was later confirmed by Kent Highways that they had indeed altered the route of the Northern Relief Road following discussions with the owners of Hempstead Farm. (see Doubleday’s behind decision to relocate Northern Relief Road through Hempstead Farm)
This is going to create a serious headache for Swale Borough Council who has been working towards safeguarding the area of land associated with potential route options for the Northern Relief Road in their forthcoming Local Plan.
The Local Plan which is still being developed considers the completion of the Northern Relief Road to be one of their strategic policies upon which much of the rest of the plan depends.
To allow a developer to undermine this central policy would be highly damaging for the Local Authorities reputation let alone the eventual selection of a route for the road.
