KENT County Council is working with a village school after a damning Ofsted report.

Bapchild and Tonge School was rated "inadequate" after an inspection in February.

It was told it had to make "significant improvements" to raise standards, particularly in its leadership and management.

John Truman, Kent Challenge lead adviser for Canterbury and Swale at KCC, said the local authority was required to tell Ofsted what it was doing to address the report's concerns.

"A statement of action was submitted within the required time and has subsequently been approved.

"Work is already underway to address the areas highlighted in the report," he said.

Meanwhile, KCC backed the school in making a complaint about the inspection process.

Mr Truman added: "Following feedback from the inspector at the end of the Ofsted inspection, concerns were raised by the school with regard to the accuracy of statements relating to school performance data.

"KCC subsequently met the head, deputy head teacher and governors and felt the school had grounds to submit a complaint."

An Ofsted spokesman said it could not comment on cases under investigation.
