ONE of the biggest battles of the election was between Independent candidate Monique Bonney and Tory Mike Whiting for West Downs ward.

Monique BonneyThe rural area has made headlines this year due to the proposed expansion of Kent Science Park, debate over the route of the final Northern Relief Road section and plans for mass housing in the countryside, so it was an important seat to win.

After a quick recount it was announced that Councillor Bonney had retained her seat, gaining 528 votes to Mr Whiting's 487,She said: "I am absolutely ecstatic. We had a fantastic turnout as well (52.1 per cent), which is really important."

Mr Whiting, who is county councillor for Swale Central, said: "I am very disappointed. We had a lot of support on the doorstep and we worked very hard. I would like to thank those who did vote for me and those who helped during the campaign."
