Fred Arnold says farewell after an amazing 22 years as our village postman, during which time he not only became a familiar face around the village, he became part of village life itself.

Now I only knew Fred for a relatively short period of time, but he always had time for a quick chat and I’ll never forget the jokes we shared about whether my letters were bills or clients paying up.

On Monday morning this week the villagers had a chance to say a last farewell when Fred came along with his wife, Betty, to attend a presentation in honour of his service to the village.

Ray Tedman gave a short speech about Fred’s career, which included time as an engineer, a bus conductor and for the final 24 years of his working life a postman. During his time as a postman he was responsible for maintaining the Sittingbourne post office fleet of bicycles, as well as doing the rounds in Bapchild.

I’m sure that he will be greatly missed, especially by the ladies, and I would like to say thanks on behalf of the village for making us all smile, even when we didn’t really feel like it.
